In recent years the drive to divert waste from landfill and avoid increasing landfill costs has seen a number of new residual waste treatment technologies emerging. Added to this, the drive for more sources of renewable energy has also prompted the demand for technologies that recover value from waste in the form of heat and electricity. Despite the industry spending many years rebranding incineration as "energy from waste", the technology still often generates opposition, which has led local authorities to look for seemingly less controversial technologies.
