The UK has ambitious and binding targets to produce 10 percent of the energy used in transport from renewable sources by 2020. But we currently produce just a little over three percent of this energy from renewables, which almost exclusively comes from biofuels. Used cooking oil and tallow make up around 35 percent of the biofuel used in the UK and the rest is produced from food crops, like sugarcane and soy. However, there are serious question marks over the long-term sustainability of using these conventional biofuels to meet our renewable transport targets.
