Recycling and the reduction of waste is a hot topic in the construction industry today. The sector is responsible for producing around one-third of the UK's total waste every year - some 120m tonnes. Of this, 85 percent could be reduced, reused or recycled, according to estimates by the Construction Recycling Alliance. The construction industry therefore has a key role to play if the UK is to bring waste down and improve its environmental credentials. There are also strong fiscal arguments for changing how we deal with waste. According to a report by analysts Frost & Sullivan, the European market for recycled construction materials such as gypsum, aggregates and recycled glass generated revenues of €744.1m in 2010, and is estimated to reach €1.3bn by 2016. It also estimates that the 30 percent of construction materials currently coming from recycled sources today could rise to as high as 90 percent in the future.
