As a result of the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012, which came into effect in January 2013 the volumes of food waste arriving to be processed at waste management sites across Scotland, such as Levenseat, have significantly increased as expected. This has resulted in significant pressure on existing infrastructure, with the volumes and nature of the waste challenging these facilities. In an approach to solve this problem and open up new opportunities, Levenseat Ltd has devised an innovative pre-treatment process that not only creates an optimised anaerobic digestion (AD) feedstock, but also improves the characteristics of the resulting substrate as a composting feedstock. This new approach recently won it the Scottish Resource Award for Excellence in Waste Management. Food waste is by nature a very difficult product to process, due to the varying levels of viscosity, its material proprieties and the associated packaging that it more often than not arrives in, all of which can cause significant problems for any biological process and no single approach can act as a "one size fits all solution".
