Are We On Target?

On the face of it, paper recovery continues to provide a good news story, exceeding the targets set for it by the EU and the UK government, and making a strong contribution to the success story that has developed over the past two decades in the recovery of secondary resources for reprocessing. Recent figures produced by the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) demonstrate a consistent overall recycling performance above 70 percent, with recovery of packaging above 85 percent. Future targets and objectives are dependent upon the shape of the EU Circular Economy Package [Towards a circular economy: A zero waste programme for Europe), which was formally withdrawn in late February and is to be recast for the end of the year.
