The London Borough of Redbridge has invested in a fleet of 16 new Mercedes Econic 2630 rear-steer 6x2 RCVs - the first Euro-6 chassis to enter service in the Borough. Featuring Heil Farid two compartment split bodies and hoppers, the Econics are used to collect both recyclables and residual domestic waste and are fitted with air suspension and axle weighing systems. "We did have some reservations about the move to Euro-6, but our drivers have been on a training course on the operation of particulate filters and the new trucks have given us no problems at all," commented council fleet engineer, Eddie Cross. "We also had concerns about increased fuel consumption, but these have proved to be unfounded, too. While it's difficult to provide directly comparable figures, the Euro-6 Econics are doing far better than expected," he adds. The new units were supplied to the London Borough of Redbridge by local dealer S&B Commercials.
