Report calls for action on rough sleeping in bins

As homelessness figures rise in the UK, action needs to be taken to stop people sheltering in bins, a study has warned. The report - by Biffa, the Open University and CIWM - calls for waste companies, waste producers, homeless charities and the public to work together to tackle the issue. The study surveyed operators in the waste sector, and found many areas of concern, despite improvements since a similar study in 2014. Around 35 per cent of waste companies have found people sleeping in bins within the past 12 months, compared with 21 per cent in 2014, while the Health and Safety Executive has recorded seven known fatalities over the past five years.
