The biggest ones used by many local councils are 37ft long, weigh 32 tonnes, have eight wheels, and are the height of two people. Refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) are the behemoths of the street scene -monster vehicles posing all sorts of hazards - and they're out and about in town centres and residential areas every weekday. Making sure they are safe for the workers who use them, and the general public in proximity to them, is a major challenge.
