Leaving aside the constant claim and counterclaim over how well off - or otherwise - we'll be once we have finally shaken-off the ties that have bound us to the rest of Europe, perhaps it would help the rest of us if our political elite started mapping-out what sort of country we want Britain to be after all the political dust has settled? Got any ideas? Because I'm not so sure they have.You'd think, wouldn't you, that improved public services might be on the agenda? You know, stuff like keeping libraries open on the basis that they are an intrinsic part of the local community and have a value far beyond being a place where you can borrow a book. A friend of mine runs a library in a small town with few other social facilities and confirms that it is now the social hub of the town. And yet it's future is threatened by constant talk of "savings."
