THE CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES

The South Pole Redevelopment Project (SPRP) has been called the largest project carried out by man on the continent of Antarctica. In fiscal year 1999 the SPRP entered the second year of an eight-year construction schedule, with completion scheduled for 2005. When completed, the SPRP will replace an existing facility that has exceeded its design life, population capacity, and ability to support the current communications and technology needs of the science community. An elevated scientific research facility will include electronic systems, new remote facilities, a communications center, various garages and shops, infrastructure upgrades for a new power plant, and fuel storage.
