Prado Seepage Prompts Brief Evacuation

Severe storms that battered Southern California in early January generated water levels behind the 106 ft (32 m) high Prado Dam that came close to setting records, forcing a halt to efforts to enlarge the earthen structure and causing minor amounts of seepage that prompted officials from the nearby city of Corona to evacuate more than 2,000 residents from downstream dwellings. After taking precautionary measures to address the seepage, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—the dam's owner and operator—found itself in the position of having to assuage concerns of the public regarding the dam's safety.
