For project manager Greg Hauser, P.E., M.ASCE, 180 ft (55 km) underground in southern Cook County, Illinois, was the best place in the world to be. That is how he describes his experience inside the high-performance tunnel-boring machine (TBM) as it bored through hard dolomite limestone during the construction of the Little Calumet Leg—the last segment (7.9 mi [12.7 km]) of the Calumet Tunnel system, which forms part of the Chicago Tunnel and Reservoir Project (TARP). "It's the greatest job there is," says Hauser, who is the area manager for Jay Dee Contractors, Inc., of Livonia, Michigan, one of the project contractors.
