New Curricula Offer Opportunities to High School Students

In an effort to fill a gap in the engineering workforce that is widening as baby boomers retire and to promote the profession to groups that traditionally have been underrepresented in it, three organizations have joined forces to develop an unusual high school program. Named the Academy of Engineering, the program will be introduced next year at 13 high schools around the country.rnThe academy model was developed by the National Academy Foundation (naf), a New York-based private entity that is working to develop curricula emphasizing particular careers and to introduce the curricula at schools around the country; by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (nacme), an organization based in White Plains, New York, that seeksrnto raise enrollments in engineering and science programs; and by Project Lead The Way, Inc., a group based in Clifton Park, New York, that, according to its Web site, creates "dynamic partnerships with our nation's schools to prepare an increasing and more diverse group of students to be successful in science, engineering, and engineering technology."
