As environmental considerations assume greater importance in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of buildings, interest in the practices used in constructing "green" buildings has increased significantly. Compared with traditional structures, green buildings are designed to require less energy, water, and other natural resources throughout their life cycles and to offer high indoor environmental quality and user comfort. Legislation advancing in the Senate would direct the federal government to adopt green building practices on a wider scale and encourage state and local governments to do the same with respect to schools.
