When a young structural engineer named Othmar H. Ammann began work on a bridge project in New York City in 1912, he probably never imagined that one day he would be involved in a celebrated dispute with one of his engineering mentors. But the soft-spoken, meticulous Ammann knew that the design conceived by his mentor-Gustav Lindenthal-for a bridge across the Hudson River linking New York and New Jersey was too large and complex.
