At press time, the world's first underground cruise ship terminal was scheduled to begin operations in Shanghai, China. The facility features a three-level, 60,000 m~2 terminal building that was constructed beneath an approximately 1 km long section of Waterfront property overlooking the Huangpu River. A public park will be landscaped above the subterranean terminal. Rising from the site of the planned park is a three-level, 4,100 m~2 observation building elevated on slender supports that rise 10 m above grade, its glass-faceted facade suggesting an elongated bubble, explains Tian-Fang Jing, p.e., a principal in the New York City office of Weidlinger Associ- ates, Inc., the firm responsible for the structural engineering of the project.
