I read with interest the article in the February issue on the interim report by the Federal Highway Administration (fhwa) concerning the collapse in Minneapolis of the Interstate 35W Bridge ("Underde-signed Gusset Plates Cited by ntsb in I-35W Bridge Collapse Investigation," pages 10-11). Apparently there were two adjacent nodes-two and three panel points away from the support at each end of the main span and at each side of the bridge-that had gusset plates of about half the required thickness. The article noted that gusset plates to either side of the overstressed locations were 1 in.
