Researchers in Australia are currently in the process of fine-tuning the next generation of solar panels, which rely on the use of a particular dye, rather than silicon, to produce electricity. These so-called dye-sensitized solar cells, which are made up of a number of layers and have a slight reddish tint, can be applied to such materials as glass and steel. In this way solar energy can be gathered from standard building components.
