Rehabilitation to Correct 'Awkward' New York Subway Linkage

A project designed to rehabilitate New York City's Bleecker Street subway station-constructed in 1904 as part of the city's first successful subway line and operated by the Interborough Rapid Transit (IRT) Company-will also correct a problem that the New York Times described in a May 7, 2005, article as both "unique" and "awkward" among the subway system's more than 450 stations. At present only southbound passengers at the Bleecker Street station, which serves the irt 6 train, can transfer directly to the adjoining Broadway-Lafayette Street station, which serves the B, D, V, and F trains of the Independent Subway System (IND) line running to Brooklyn.
