The collapse last summer of a highway bridge in Minneapolis, discussed in the December issue ("Construction Begins on Replacement of Collapsed Minneapolis Bridge," pages 18-19), and the explosion of an old steam pipe in New York City near Grand Central Station remind us of a depressing truth: the nation's infrastructure is decaying at a fast pace. In its 2005 Report Card for America's Infrastructure, asce assessed the health of the nation's roads, ports, power transmission lines, and other infrastructure and gave an overall "poor" grade of D. It also estimated that it would cost $1.6 trillion over five years to fix the problem.
