More Debate about the Body of Knowledge

Although the ship has already sailed, I am compelled to express my opinion regarding the recently published second edition of the Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century: Preparing the Civil Engineer for the Future as abridged in "Preparing the Civil Engineer of Tomorrow by 'Raising the Bar,'" which appeared in the September 2007 issue. I appreciate that hours of dedicated work by many participants went into this publication, and I thank them for their efforts. As an owner of a small consulting firm, the combined duties of developing work and managing projects have left me with little time or inclination to participate in the work of asce. I have, however, served on the board of the Indiana section of the American Council of Engineering Companies, from which I have concluded that most consulting engineers are similarly occupied and participate little in national efforts.
