ASCE Panel Finds Risk Level in New Orleans 'Unacceptable'

Asce's Hurricane Katrina External Review Panel (ERP) has concluded that despite continuing improvements to the hurricane protection system in the New Orleans area, the danger that residents there face from a hurricane similar in size and strength to Katrina, which devastated the region in August 2005, remains "unacceptable." The erp is urging the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to convey this risk to the residents of the city quickly, clearly, and directly. It is also exhorting the Corps to advocate the formulation of an effective evacuation and emergency management plan for the region and to continue to upgrade the level of protection provided by both engineered and nonengineered methods.
