Imaging System Saves Time and Money, Improves Dam Safety

Researchers at the Laboratorio Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), Portugal's national laboratory for civil engineering research, in Lisbon, have developed a method for monitoring the health of aging dams that is both taster and less expensive than traditional methods. The researchers estimate that there are approximately 70,000 large dams worldwide that are more than 25 years old and 24,000 others that are more than 50 years old. The new imaging system can model surface deformations to determine any displacement anomalies in older dams with approximately 80 percent less manpower and 60 percent less funding than required by traditional inspections.
