Background/Objectives. Laboratory studies show the rapid transformation of municipal water and site water to reducing conditions on addition of small amounts of metal and metal alloys. These conditions are vital to anaerobic degradation of chlorinated compounds. Furthermore, removing oxidizing species from injectate water is important to the health of the native and inoculated microbial cultures. Adding zero-valent iron, ZVI, to water rapidly reduces the oxygen reduction potential (ORP) and increases the pH. These parameters can easily be monitored real-time to assess injection activities.
