The United Kingdom Structure believed to be one of the earliest railroad roundhouses in the world is now being restored to become part of a new college campus in Derby. It was designed and constructed in 1839 by Robert Stephenson, who with his father, George, also constructed the Rocket, one of the world's first successful steam locomotives. The roundhouse, which with its 16 sides is not actually round, features a large turntable that was used for maneuvering locomotives so that they could be moved into and out of repair bays that lined the roundhouse perimeter.
