Long Known as a leader in the field of storm-water management, the City of Seattle has helped to pioneer low-impact development and other approaches to improving water quality in city settings. In early June, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) unveiled what may become another common approach to improving the urban environment. The central focus of a major urban revi-talization initiative, the 2.7 acre (1.1 ha) Thornton Creek Water Quality Channel seeks to improve water quality by fun-neling storm-water runoff from a highly urbanized area into a newly created and highly visible waterway designed to remove pollutants while providing an aesthetically appealing amenity.
