Kansas City Submits $2.4-billion Sewer Overflow Control Plan

On January 30 the Water Services Department of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, submitted to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) a plan estimated at $2.4 billion to control sewer overflows. Expected to be the largest infrastructute investment in the history of Kansas City, the plan will form the basis of a future consent decree to be negotiated with the EPA. Although it relies heavily on traditional approaches to addressing sewer overflows, the plan also calls for significant use of "green" infrastructure to complement its struc-tutal solutions.
