This past fall the City of Calgary, Alberta, began operating its 100 ML/d Pine Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility, an advanced plant that features biological nutrient removal (BNR) and the largest effluent filtration system of its type in the world. At press time the plant's liquid treatment systems were undergoing commissioning, and that process was expected to be complete by the middle of March. Recent population growth and anticipated growth prompted Calgary to construct the C$463-million (U.S.$380-million) plant, says Jim Miller, P.Eng., the manager of infrastructure delivery for Calgary's Department of Utilities and Environmental Protection. "We've had some pretty phenomenal growth in the last eight to ten years," he says. "Our existing wastewater treatment plants were nearing capacity."
