Florida Runway Only The Second of Its Kind In North America

ANEW RUNWAY at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FIX), in Broward County, Florida, will be only the second of its kind in North America. Unlike most runways, this one will traverse several significant transportation corridors, including a federal highway and a railroad. The only other runway of its type on the continent opened in 2006 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. That airstrip passes over Interstate 285. Both runways were designed by Atkins (formerly PBS&J), an engineering firm based in Epsom, United Kingdom, with offices throughout the United States.
