A research teamled by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is looking more than 2,000 years into the past in pursuit of techniques to make modern concrete more durable and environmentally friendly. The researchers are studying ancient Roman seawater concrete to determine why harbor structures throughout the Mediterranean have remained stable and intact for thousands of years despite the harsh marine conditions.
