摘要

Need some beach time but not looking forward to the traffic jam heading to the shore? If you live in New York City, you might someday be able to let the beach come to you-well, to a pier along the Manhattan waterfront, at least. You'd still have to get there, of course, but once you did you'd find the sand dunes, shade umbrellas, and other familiar fixtures of the beach experience just waiting for you and your colorful beach towel. That is the idea behind the City Beach project as envisioned by the New York City designer Blayne Ross, who says he was inspired by a local program that has converted several old piers into green spaces that offer playgrounds and other recreational possibilities. The plan involves taking an old barge, converting it so that it would offer occupiable space both above and below deck, and covering it with sand, various structures, and amenities. The barge would then be towed into position for the summer, most likely at a Hudson River site on the west side of Manhattan "to be sure to get the sun all day," Ross explains.
