Researchers Find Use for Bridge Displacement Testing During Construction

Til tmeters are commonly used to monitor the health of bridges after they have been opened to traffic, but a team of researchers believes that employing the devices during construction could yield valuable data for ensuring that the structures have been soundly built and were not over-stressed during construction. An engineering team recently used a system of gravity-referenced tiltmeters to measure pier displacement while constructing the new Jeremiah Morrow Bridge, which is being built in southwest Ohio to replace the bridge of the same name that opened in 1965.
