It's a long-standing maxim: engineers design bridges. But in the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County stands a bridge—the new Gold Line Bridge— designed by the Minneapolis-based public artist Andrew Leicester, who was selected on the basis of a design competition. (He was selected by a committee composed of community representatives from the project area.) Engineers were, of course, closely involved in the bridge's construction. The $18.6-million design/build project was built by New York City—based Skanska USA, and the Los Angeles office of the international architecture and engineering firm AECOM served as Skanska's primary design subcontractor. The bridge project is a major element of the nearly $2-billion Gold Line extension project, a 24 mi expansion of the light-rail system from its current end point, in Pasadena, to the city of Montclair.
