Opportunity to address gender equality and empowerment as applicable to women

The South African Institution of CivilEngineering (SAICE) supports the notion ofa world where all people can live productive,vibrant and peaceful lives on a healthyplanet. In our quest to promote transdisciplinarythinking in solving problems relatedto infrastructure, this article seeks toexplore opportunities to address inequalityand empowerment as these apply towomen. The initiative to address inequalityand empowerment is identified as UnitedNations Sustainable Development Goal(SDG) #5, which has been defined by SouthAfrica as a pillar to enable the achievementof the remaining sixteenSDGs. Therefore, theachievement ofthe SDGs in theSouth Africandevelopmentagenda is a priorityto enable oursuccess. This article is a brief overview ofinequality in South Africa, specifically as itapplies to women in the engineering sector.
