JOHN DUNCAN Pr Eng, a recognised leader in the structural engineering industry, obtained his BSc Eng (Civil) from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1976. From January 1977 to April 1984 he worked in structural design, first at Dorbyl Structures and then at Keeve Steyn and Partners. From May 1984 to October 1987 he was self-employed (structural design), before joining the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction (SAISC) from November 1987, where he worked until March 1991 as consultant to the steel construction industry. During this time he was a contributing author to the well-known SAISC Red Handbook. Since 1991 he has been a self-employed consulting structural engineer. In 1999 he co-founded Cadex Systems SA (Pty) Ltd, a structural engineering software sales and support business. He currently is part-owner and director. Major projects that he has been involved in over the years include the Duvha and Kriel Power Stations, the Jwaneng and Finsch diamond mines, and numerous water storage projects. He provides the structural engineering input on many sculptures created by a leading South African artist. Of these the most well-known is the Mandela Capture Site. His contribution towards the civil engineering profession includes membership and past chairman of the JSD, and extensive work with SABS on Standards and Codes of Practice.
