Review Private finance initiatives: London's social housing in an increasingly Iinancialised context

Hodkinson's extensive analysis of private finance initiatives (PFI) in the British social (public) housing system is a timely intervention. It confronts the implications of privatisation at a time when there is a vital need to understand municipal governance in the face of changing financial landscapes for local governments (see Beswick and Penny 2018). Beyond the UK, Hodkinson's work adds to the burgeoning literature on financing housing-both public and private-and the role of complex corporate arrangements, highlighting the consequences of funding from private equity and venture capitalists (see Aalbers 2017; Rolnik 2019). His book is a powerful argument against PFI, and what Hodkinson does most convincingly remind us of political consequences for residents of privatisation, neoliberalisation and financialisation.
