Dengue virus ( DEN) , a single-stranded RNA virus of the family Flaviviridae, is transmitted from one infected person or animal to another by the mosquitos Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti. There are four serotypes of the dengue virus ( serotypes 1 - 4) . The virus is responsible for dengue fever (DF) , dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). In the recent years, the incidence rate of DF/DHF has been increasing around the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical zones. Dengue is the most significant arthropod-borne viral disease affecting public health. Aedes albopictus is the primary vector of the dengue virus, and also serves as a host for the virus. Aedes albopictus mosquitos in different geographic regions are susceptible to the dengue virus. Distribution, density, and rate of infection of Aedes albopictus are all factors determining when and where dengue epidemics will occur. This species of mosquito has been identified in nearly 40 countries. In China, there is a particularly high density of Aedes albopictus in Guizhou Province. Although there has been no report of dengue epidemics in this province, the dengue virus has been detected in mosquitos. In this study, we explored the molecular epidemiology of a dengue virus strain from Aedes albopictus collected in Guizhou Province.
