Determination of Polyol Content in CSF of Patients with Braintumor and Clinical Implication

Objective To determine and compare polyol contents in CSF of the patients with braintumor and those without braintumor in order to know their roles in the course of biochemical metabolism of braintumor. Methods The contents of 4 kinds of polyol (fructose, glucitol, inositol and mannose) in CSF of 40 braintumor patients and 15 controls were determined by the gas chromatograph made in Japan. Results The concentration of polyol in CSF of braintumor group was obviously higher than in control group (P < 0.01) , and it was higher in CSF of the malignant braintumor patients than that in CSF of benign braintumor patients (P <0.01) . The preopera-tive content was higher than postoperative one. Conclusion It is concluded that polyol in CSF, especially fructose and glucitol, has a close relationship with the growth and metabolism of braintumor, and it may play an important role in the growth and metabolism course of braintumor.
