Syklodekstriinien käyttömahdollisuuksia uusien lääkevalmisteiden kehittämisessä tutkitaan tällä hetkellä erittäin laajasti. Ensimmäiset syklo-dekstriinejä sisältävät lääkevalmisteet tulivat markkinoille 1980-luvun lopussa Japanissa ja Euroopassa. Suomessa ensimmäinen syklodekstriiniä sisältävä lääkevalmiste tuli myyntiin vuonna 1995. Tässä katsausartikkelissa kuvataan syklodekstriiniteknologian toimintaperiaate ja arvioidaan syklodekstriineillä saavutettavia etuja eri lääkemuodoissa ja lääkkeen antotavoissa.%Cyclodextrins (CDs) are homologous cyclic oligosaccharides consisting of six, seven, eight or nine glucose units and called α-, β-, γ- and δ-cyclodextrins, respectively. CDs are cone-shaped molecules in which the polar hydroxyl groups of glucose units are oriented outwards. The outer surface of the CDs is thus very hydrophilic, while the inside of the cavity is hydrophobic. CDs form inclusion complexes with a wide variety of drug molecules. The minimum requirement for the formation of an inclusion complex is that the guest molecule fit at least partially into the CD cavity. Formation of an inclusion complex with CDs can modify the aqueous solubility, dissolution rate, bioavailability and stability of the drug and reduce the irritation due it. CD technology is useful for most dosage forms (tablet, capsule, solution, ointment) and administration routes (oral, par-enteral, ophthalmic, nasal, rectal, transder-mal). Although the natural CDs (α-, β-, γ-and δ-CDs) cannot be patented, CD derivatives and inclusion complexes between CD and a drug can be. The use of CD technology in medicinal applications has increased dramatically in the last ten years. CD-containing drugs are already commercially available in Japan and in many European countries.
