Novartis tackles rise in respiratory diseases

Respiratory medicine is one of the most exciting areas of research and potential growth for pharmaceutical companies as the lon-term effects of smoking and an ageing population filter through. There has been a centre dedicated to respiratory disease research at Novartis' site in Horsham, UK, since 1996, when Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz merged to form the pharmaceutical company. Novartis decided it would expand this research centre in August 1998. Last month UK health minister Alan Milburn opened, what Novartis believes to be, the biggest respiratory diseases research centre in the world.
