Bad science, fraud and and peer review

There have always been high-profile cases of sloppy science and scientific fraud. Louis Pasteur is reported to have committed fraud, by claiming to have used his own method to prepare the anthrax vaccine when he used that of his competitor. The data of Gregor Mendel's plant genetics experiments were first thought to be 'too good' to be true. Even now, we are embroiled in one of the most high-profile cases of scientific fraud the science world has ever seen. These kinds of cases seem to be getting more common. Perhaps it is because more scientific research is undertaken. Or it may be because scientists are afflic-ted with the same character flaws as everyone else.
