US production of natural soda ash increased to a record 11.2 million tons last year, about 100,000 tons more than were produced in 2007, says the US Geological Survey (USGS) in a year-end industry report. North American demand is expected to grow 1.5%-2%/year during the next several years, USGS says. Analysts expect global growth to be higher than in North America. Export sales by US producers have risen recently due to improving market conditions, sources say.
