This is an exciting time in the development of the understanding of the nature and mode of action of the molybdenum cofactors of the oxomolybdoenzymes and their tungsten counterparts. Thus, protein cystallography is now providing vital information which complements earlier spectroscopic and chemical studies, the total synthesis of Moco is in prospect and with this, and the preparation of variants and close analogues, studies of the natural systems and the mode of action will be considerably augmented.
