PUMPING EQUIPMENT FOR THE OIL REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRY

VNIIAEN (Scientific Research and Design-and-Engineering Institute of Atomic and Power Pumping Machine Building) was established in Sumy, Ukraine, more than 45 years ago. In Soviet times, the institute was the base organization for pumps for thermal and atomic power generation, oil production and pipeline oil transport, land reclamation, oil refining, and chemical plants. At the present time, VNIIAEN is the leading organization for pumping machine building in Ukraine and is the only pump center in the countries of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) where a whole range of operations - from scientific computational and experimental research to fabrication of full-scale prototypes and their testing on working parameters - is carried out. With an experimental plant in its organizational structure, VNIIAEN turned out from a developer of technical documents into a supplier of unique pumping equipment and spare parts. The institute has also a testing center, which is the strongest in Europe, for testing dynamic electric pumps with a power of up to 8000 kW on full-scale parameters. The testing center is accredited in the Ukrainian and Russian certification systems with the right of conducting certification tests. The institute has a licence from the Ukranian Nuclear Regulation Administration for the the right of designing articles for atomic power plants. The quality assurance system developed at VNIIAEN is now certified by the Veritas Bureau (Germany). Initially, VNIIAEN used to deliver one-time (occasional) orders for unique items not produced in lots by specialized pump plants to meet the needs of oil and gas complexes, oil refineries, and petrochemical plants. The inventory of prototypes begins with KhB 500-650 pumps with a power of about 1000 kW designed to pump over aqueous solutions of mono- and diethylamines in plants for cleaning natural gas from hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. The first industrial-scale prototypes were made in 1987, tested, and supplied to the city of Sovetabad in Turkmenistan. In subsequent years, the Sumy plant Nasosenergomash (Pump and Power Machinery) produced several scores of such units.
