Where humans fear to tread: New robotics technology Enables hands-off hazmat management

Not only are robots being de- ployed on Mars to collect infor- mation in an atmosphere too harsh for human life, they are also being used in hazardous terrestrial sit- uations. Robotics technology can range from the immobile robots that transport samples and materials from one area of the lab to another, to mo- bile robots that handle chemicals and materials when human interaction is too dangerous. Robotics technology can solve many critical safety problems associated with handling and manag- ing hazardous materials (haz- mats).
