New kinds of peptide derivatives that adopt defined folding patterns in solution—primarily helical conformations—have been identified independently by three research groups. The compounds are γ- and δ-peptides— oligomers composed of γ- and δ-amino acids, residues whose backbones are respectively two and three carbon atoms longer than those of naturally occurring α-amino acids.
