Instant hydrogelation of coumarin-derivatized glycine has been demonstrated in the absence of long-chain hydrophobic groups upon formation of a zinc(II) coordination polymer, which exhibits fluorescence enhancement upon gelation. Gel formation by small molecules has attracted intense research interest in recent years. Though gel formation by organic molecules has been reported widely in the literature, coordination polymeric gels have only been a recent interest. Metallogels or coordination polymeric gels can be formed by (i) the interaction of metal ions with a gel matrix or (ii) metal-ligand interactions containing small molecules or long-chain molecules.
