Facile, environmentally friendly fabrication of porous silver monoliths using the ionic liquid N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium formate

The environmentally friendly ionic liquid N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-ammonium formate works as a reaction medium, reducing and templating agent in the mild microwave synthesis (5 min, 80 ℃) of a macroporous silver framework from AgNO_3.rnAs an innovative class of solvents, ionic liquids have received substantial attention over recent years. They often exhibit properties like negligible vapour pressures, wide liquidus ranges, good thermal stabilities, considerable electric conductivities, and wide electrochemical windows, which are advantageous for a large number of applications. However, despite being initially considered as environmentally benign solvents, concerns have arisen over the last years that although many ionic liquids comply with the rules of green chemistry the environmental toxicity and biodegradability of many of them cannot be neglected.
