Benefits for Gig Workers

The main thesis of this article is that in order to make the economy both much more efficient (in terms of allocation of resources) and a fairer one, all employees should receive benefits, including those who labor in the gig economy.1 The article first provides some background on the benefits that gig workers currently receive (many receive none). It then examines the reason this condition is burdening the economy and runs counter to social justice and briefly reviews the ways courts tried to tackle the issue. After listing the benefits available to "traditional" employees, the article outlines various ways some or many-if not all-of these benefits could be made available to gig workers (as well as to those who work part time).
