Fundamentals, Adaptive Leadership and Mission Command

The 3d Cavalry Regiment (3d CR), a Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), has deployed multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. However, not until its most recent deployment to Afghanistan, from May 2016-February 2017, did the Regiment encounter several unique challenges, many of which now constitute a new "norm" for our Army - deploying with less than half of assigned forces, and spread throughout an operational theater. Thus, the 3d Cavalry Regiment's preparation for and execution of this mission offers pertinent lessons to other Brigades who may face a similar set of challenges in the future.
